Abstract
Artificial intelligence refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and perform tasks like humans. We have witnessed various research/surveys on AI from the Western Perspective/thinkers like Mill, Kant, and Aristotle. However, the convergence of ancient philosophical wisdom and modern technological advancement opens new pathways for ethical and progressive innovation. This paper explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Jain philosophy, and healthcare, examining how the principles of Jainism can guide the application of AI in the medical field. The underlying principle here in development is responsibility. Jainism, with its postulates of Ahiṃsā(non-violence), Anekāntavāda(pluralism), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness), offers altogether a unique ethical framework that aligns with the viable call for humane and unbiased AI systems.
In healthcare, AI is revolutionizing diagnostics, personalized treatment, and patient monitoring, enhancing efficiency and access. However, ethical concerns regarding privacy, bias, and decision-making authority persist. By integrating Jain values, AI in healthcare can be oriented towards compassionate care, equitable treatment, and respect for all life forms. The principle of Anekāntavāda encourages inclusivity that considers studying one domain from different perspectives, while Ahiṃsā emphasizes minimizing harm in machine or robotic decisions. Moreover, the concept of Aparigraha can guide us not to misuse AI or exploit resources. We simply cannot be over-dependent on AI for very simple things, as it is a harm to human creative ideas or thought.
This interdisciplinary study proposes that integrating Jain ethical principles into AI development can lead to a fairer, more transparent, and a kind healthcare system. This paper will also elaborate on the significance of cross-domain dialogue in shaping the future of AI with moral responsibility, where each person should hold the autonomy of inclining their innovative ideas with human values.
